John Robert Medlen

Beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, and the best, most loving, doting grandpa any child could ask for, John Medlen, passed into our Lord‘s loving arms, September 1, 2025 after a nearly five-year battle with cancer. He never complained and remained positive throughout his journey.

Born to the union of William and Mary (St. Julian) Medlen on September 27, 1952, John was one of nine children: six brothers and two sisters. He was a graduate of Waite High School and a retiree of Libbey Glass. Known for his mischievous spirit and dry sense of humor, John had a way of keeping those around him guessing, always with a twinkle in his eye. His stories were legendary, often unbelievable, but always delivered with charm and wit. Those who knew him will remember him as a true character.

John was never one to sit around. He loved being with his family, whether it was golfing with his son, fishing, going to the park with his grandkids, attending recitals or sporting events. He even played Legos and coached baseball and soccer . John was always dependable, and his kids knew they could always call dad when they needed to. His card playing, which often included never even looking at his hand, had to be seen to believe. He was a loyal Tigers fan and could always be found on Saturdays watching the Fighting Irish! John also found enjoyment in going to estate sales and garage sales. But above all, he loved his family deeply. We will miss his infectious laughter and the warmth he brought into our lives.

John leaves behind his devoted wife of 48 years, Cindy (married September 3, 1972), their three loving children, Maria (Bryan), Matt, and Melissa (Victor), and his greatest treasures, his grandchildren: Aurora, Delia, and Oscar. He is also survived by his brothers Arthur (affectionately known as Uncle Mick), Paul (Sally), James (Terry), and sisters Kathy and Therese. He is preceded in death by brothers Bill, Danny, and Don and niece Jessica.

Visitation will be held at Walter Funeral Home, Glendale Ave., on Monday, September 8, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a rosary service at 7:00 PM. A funeral Mass will take place at St. Joseph Church in Maumee on Tuesday, September 9, at 10:30 AM with Father Eric Schild presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Victory Center, The Metroparks of Toledo, or a charity of your choice.
