James Edward Hughes, a beloved member of his community and a devoted family man, passed away on December 28, 2025, at Waterford at Levis Commons. Born on December 16, 1934, in St. Marys, Ohio, Jim's life was characterized by a strong commitment to faith, family, and service.

A proud High School graduate of Waite High School, Jim served honorably in the United States Navy and Naval Reserve during the Korean War. After finishing his military service, he dedicated many years as a sales clerk and assistant manager for Dean & Barry Paint, culminating his career working in the offices of the Lucas County Clerk of Court.

Jim's spiritual journey took a significant turn in the summer of 1964 when he attended a Billy Graham crusade with his brother, Frank, and their Uncle Bob and families. It was a life-altering moment that transformed his path as he embraced his faith and committed his life to Jesus Christ. His faith was further strengthened when he met his wife Dorothy through a mutual church friend, and they married on June 12, 1971. An active member of the Detroit Avenue Wesleyan and later First Alliance Church of Toledo, Jim contributed to his church community by helping with sponsored dinners, participating in the Gideon ministry to distribute Bibles, and regularly visiting nursing home residents and hospital patients. His humility, compassion, and fervent ability to pray made him a cherished figure among his peers.

Jim's heart was particularly known for its compassion, a quality he displayed even in the face of tremendous personal loss. He experienced the heartbreak of losing his son, Jeffery Allen Hughes, in a tragic auto accident while Jeff was serving in the United States Army stationed in Germany. Despite his own grief, Jim was seen comfortingly attending to others at his son's funeral—an enduring testament to his caring nature.

In addition to his compassionate spirit, Jim was a passionate sport enthusiast. He proudly cheered for The Ohio State Buckeyes, as well as the Cleveland Browns and Guardians (formerly known as the Indians). He also enjoyed the camaraderie of family gatherings, participating in their monthly Pinnacle card club with great enthusiasm.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Joan (Spitler) Hughes; brother William Hughes and wife Ethel; stepson John Paul Campbell; grandchildren Mary Digby and husband Jared, Joel Campbell and wife Melissa; and great-grandchild Sloan.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Florence Margrete George Hughes; his brothers, Franklin Hughes (surviving wife Jeannine), Donald Hughes (surviving wife Betty), Raymond Hughes (surviving wife Juanita); his sister Doris Swartz and husband Jim; and his son, Jeffery Allen Hughes.
